As with other problems affecting the face, ptosis can be due to a birth defect, injury, disease, or the aging process. The muscle that lifts the eyelid up does not function adequately to “open the eye”. In most cases, surgery is necessary to tighten the muscle. If there is little to no muscle function, a new muscle system is created to lift the eyelid.
