Four reasons to follow post-op directions

You are here: Home / Four reasons to follow post-op directions

The surest way to become a former patient of Dr. Popp’s is to purposefully ignore his post-operative instructions.

“Those patients jeopardize their recovery and the results of their procedure. We give them written instructions we’ve refined for more than three decades,” Dr. Popp said. “And all of our instructions have a reason to be on that sheet.”

Dr. Popp said more patients deviate from the instructions than you probably know. He said proper post-operative care helps to:

  1. Reduce swelling
  1. Limit bruising
  1. Prevent infection
  1. Enhance healing

Refusals to follow his orders frustrate and anger him because many patients simply decide they won’t do what’s best for themselves.

Anybody who has cosmetic surgery signs a consent form. They agree to allow the doctor or nurse do the procedure. This is called informed consent.

In Dr. Popp’s office, patients initial and sign the form before the procedure. They agree to follow all the instructions given. So if they don’t, they basically violate the contract.

So what happens if patients return for follow-ups and tell Dr. Popp they didn’t follow his directions

“In most cases I tell them I recorded in their chart they’re non-compliant and they took responsibility for their own recovery and results,” he said. “Basically, I wash my hands of it.”
