4 Myths & Misconceptions About Cosmetic Surgery

You are here: Home / 4 Myths & Misconceptions About Cosmetic Surgery

In the world of cosmetic surgery, there are plenty of myths and misconceptions. We’ve addressed four of the more common ones with Dr. Jeff Popp.

True or false:

  1. Liposuction is an easy way to lose weight.

False

“It’s really a contouring procedure,” he said. “People who tend to do the best with liposuction are those who are roughly their normal size and weight for their height, sex and age. But they’re disproportionate.”

For example, say you have a flat stomach but bigger thighs. You want to better balance the two. That you can do with liposuction.

“But if you take someone who is 200 to 300 pounds overweight and do liposuction, they’ll still look fat,” Dr. Popp said. “Liposuction never has and probably never will be a means to lose weight. It’s more complicated than that.”

Liposuction is best for diet and exerciseresistant areas that aren’t too large.

  1. Women with breast implants are more likely to get breast cancer.

False

The opposite is actually true, according to several studies. One reason could be that women who can afford implants are generally healthier. And it doesn’t matter whether they have silicone or saline implants, there’s no increased incidence of breast cancer with implants.

  1. Botox can cause droopy eyelids

True

“Botox just paralyzes muscle. So whatever muscle you inject, that muscle will be temporarily paralyzed,” Dr. Popp said.

“But Botox doesn’t know where to stop and start. It’s a solution that may drift into other areas.”

But he said the adjacent muscles will be affected for a shorter time than the targeted area.

  1. Cosmetic procedures like liposuction and Botox are becoming more popular among men these days

True

“People in general, both male and female, have shown an increased interest in these procedures because everyone wants to look younger,” Dr. Popp said.
